Why the ‘beautiful game’ matters beyond the pitch: football, inclusion and the power of belonging

Once again football has captured global headlines, attracting scrutiny and condemnation off the pitch. FIFA has found itself embroiled in fresh controversy, with President Gianni Infantino facing renewed criticism for blurring the boundaries between football administration, commercial interests and political power. For many, it is another reminder that the organisation charged with stewarding the world’s most popular sport too often falls short of the values the game itself inspires. Yet, the enduring significance of football lies not in its governing body but in the extraordinary ways the game brings people together across borders, identities and differences.

Football as a universal language of belonging

Football is arguably the world’s most global sport and an extraordinarily influential cultural phenomenon. Played and watched in every corner of the world, it connects billions of people through shared experiences of competition, identity, belonging and emotion. Whether in a village square, a refugee settlement, a school playground or a packed stadium, football creates spaces where people who might otherwise never meet find common purpose.

As such, football enjoys unique resonance and appeal. It provides a universal language that transcends borders, class, race, ethnicity, language, religion and other divides. In an era marked by growing political polarisation, anti-migrant sentiment and social fragmentation, the game offers a compelling counter-narrative: that diversity can strengthen communities and help them flourish.
