“Kete tene: little rumours” Gender, disinformation and insecurity in the Central African Republic

In the Central African Republic, gendered mis- and disinformation deeply impacts community security and political participation. Drawing on field research and social media analysis in Bangui, Sibut and Kaga Bandoro, it explores how political elites, armed groups, and local influencers exploit gender norms: manipulating “protective” masculinities to incite violence, and using digital smears to marginalise female leaders. Moving beyond technical fact-checking, the report demonstrates why information manipulation needs to be understood as a social phenomenon rooted in conflict-related fear and power dynamics. It offers guidance for peacebuilding practitioners, donors and policymakers in designing gender-sensitive programmes to tackle mis- and disinformation in fragile contexts.
