This report looks at gender roles in Kenya, and the effects that gender norms and attitudes have on women’s duties and incomes both inside and outside of the household. The study results aim to provide direction to program implementers for addressing gender social and cultural norms that limit women’s economic empowerment.

The study’s main findings draw from experiences concerning: changes in gender roles, social norms and attitudes; control over household and business income; and, women as leaders. In response, SNV recommends that programmes: sensitise both men and women on shared division of labours and changing gender roles in society; work to change the attitude that men who cannot provide for their family are not ‘real men’; and, introduce strategies to share the role of household provider.
