Fear & Fairness: A survey of public attitudes to sexual orientation and gender non-conformity in Mauritius

There is no shortage of anecdotal evidence of violence and discrimination towards LGBTI people in Africa yet hardly any detailed, statistically sound studies have been done about the actual opinions of Africans on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Fear & Fairness: A survey of public attitudes to sexual orientation and gender non-conformity in Mauritius shows that the majority of Mauritians support equal rights and legal protections for LGBTI people despite concerns about the erosion of the conservative socio-moral status quo. This balance between apparently competing views points to both challenges and opportunities for advancing the freedom, equality, and social and economic inclusion of LGBTI people in the country. Following the decriminalization of same-sex relations in 2023, shared social values of justice and fairness provide a foundation for more substantial access to human rights and greater social acceptance of LGBTI people.
